Brazil's cooperative movement is establishing itself as a leading force in the transition to a greener, more responsible economy. With practices that reduce environmental impact and strengthen governance, the sector has stood out in projects that connect sustainability, social impact and innovation.

A recent example is the Economia Verde (Green Economy) project, led by Sicredi Ouro Verde MT (a Sicredi credit cooperative in the state of Mato Grosso) in partnership with ESGreen, which earned international recognition as the only Brazilian project selected for the Leaders Summit 2024, held at UN headquarters in New York.

The project aims to broaden access to green credit lines for micro and small entrepreneurs, as well as family farmers. To do so, it uses an ESG score built on the ESGreen platform, which measures the degree of maturity in environmental, social and governance practices.

With this model, small businesses that previously had no access to this type of funding become recognized for good ESG practices, something usually available only to large companies.
